Supplemental, Not Essential

If you know me, you know I love a good supplement. I use them myself, recommend them when appropriate, and truly believe they can be a powerful tool to support your health.
But here's something I remind my patients all the time...
They're called supplements for a reason.
They're meant to supplement a healthy lifestyle, not replace one.
I often see people spending hundreds of dollars on the latest greens powder, collagen, magnesium, probiotics, or adaptogens while overlooking the habits that have the biggest impact on how they feel every single day.
The truth is, no supplement can make up for consistently poor sleep, chronic stress, nutrient-poor meals, or a sedentary lifestyle. Think of supplements as the icing on the cake—the foundation is built by the choices you make every day.
Here are the basics I encourage everyone to focus on first:
Sleeping 7-9 hours consistently
Daily movement (walking counts!)
Drinking enough water
Protein at each meal
Managing stress
Getting adjusted regularly to support nervous system function

Food for Thought
"The more you learn, the more your brain will positively change and adapt."
Sound familiar? Yep. I’m talking about neuroplasticity; one of my favorite concepts because it reminds us that our brains are never "stuck." No matter your age, your brain has an incredible ability to change, adapt, and grow.
Think of your brain as a giant web of interconnected neurons. These neurons are the basic working units of your brain and nervous system, constantly communicating through electrical and chemical signals. Every time you learn a new skill, practice a new habit, or challenge yourself in a different way, those neurons begin forming stronger connections.
Here's where it gets really interesting:
Learn something new → Repeat it consistently → Build stronger neural pathways → Create muscle memory → Strengthen those pathways with myelin (think of it as a fatty insulation), allowing messages to travel faster and more efficiently.
The more often you practice something, the more automatic it becomes. That's why the first workout feels awkward, learning a new language takes effort, and playing an instrument can seem impossible at first, but with repetition, your brain literally rewires itself to become more efficient.
To me, this is such an encouraging reminder that learning should never stop. Read the book. Take the class. Learn the recipe. Try the hobby. Pick up the instrument. Challenge your brain in new ways.
Just like we exercise our muscles to stay physically strong, we should exercise our brains to stay mentally sharp. Every new experience is another opportunity to build stronger neural connections and support lifelong brain health.
So here's your little challenge this week: What's one new thing you can learn or practice? Your future brain will thank you.anges where you can and giving yourself grace where you can't.
